Smart Lock Installation

Keypad and app-controlled locks fitted and set up properly, on doors that are actually suited to them.

Smart Lock Installation service in Columbus, Ohio

Smart locks are genuinely useful in the right house. Codes instead of keys, temporary access for a cleaner or a dog walker, and no more hiding a spare under a plant pot where everyone looks first.

They are also the residential hardware most likely to be installed badly, usually because nobody checked whether the door suited one before buying it.

What we install

  • Keypad deadbolts, code entry with no app.
  • App-controlled and Bluetooth locks.
  • Wi-Fi connected locks.
  • Keypad handlesets and lever sets.
  • Retrofit locks that fit over an existing deadbolt on the inside.

We fit locks we supply and locks you bought yourself.

Your door has to suit one

This is the part that gets skipped, and it is the reason smart locks get blamed for problems that are not theirs.

A smart lock throws its own bolt using a small motor. If the door has to be pulled, lifted or leaned on before the bolt will go across, that motor is fighting the door every single time. You get a lock that jams, drains batteries, and eventually reports itself locked when it is not.

A door that closes cleanly and latches on its own is the requirement. If yours does not, that wants sorting first, and it is usually a strike adjustment rather than anything major. We would rather do that than fit a lock we know will fail.

Before you buy one

  • Deadbolt or handle. They are not interchangeable. A keypad handle will not fit a hole drilled for a deadbolt. Buy the same type as what is on the door now.
  • Backset and door thickness. Not every lock fits every door.
  • Keep a mechanical key. Most smart locks include one. Do not fit a keypad-only lock on the only door into your house.
  • Check the batteries. Every smart lock runs on them, and they go flat at inconvenient moments.

Send us a photo of your current lock and the door edge before ordering. Hardware you supply is not covered by our warranty, since we did not supply it.

Are they more secure?

Not inherently. A smart lock is a convenience upgrade rather than a security one. A good mechanical deadbolt in a properly reinforced frame is a strong door, with or without a keypad on it.

Where they do help is the human side of security. No spare key under a mat, no key handed to a contractor and never returned, and a code you can change the day someone stops needing it.

Common questions

Will a smart lock fit my door?

Most will fit a standard door, but fitting and working well are different things. The door needs to close and latch cleanly on its own. Send us a photo of the door edge and your current lock and we will tell you before you buy.

What happens when the batteries die?

Most give plenty of warning first. Nearly all have a mechanical key override, and some can be jumped from an external power source. Keep a physical key somewhere you can get to it.

Can you install one I bought online?

Yes. Check the deadbolt-or-handle question and the backset first. Locks you supply are not covered by our warranty.

Are smart locks more secure than a normal deadbolt?

Not inherently. They are a convenience improvement. The security comes from the quality of the deadbolt and the strength of the frame it throws into.

Can I give someone a temporary code?

On most models yes, and it is the best reason to have one. Codes for a cleaner, a dog walker or a guest, deleted when they stop needing access.

Do you set it up as well as fit it?

Yes. Fitted, aligned, connected where relevant, and tested before we leave.
